He sees her against 'the Morris wall-papers' in her father's Lodge (he is the Master of the College). Edward goes on to say that she appears 'like a purple flower', i.e. a hyacinth, a flower used in Morris's designs. He rejects the simile, but the connection is there. Fernald's Cambridge edition of Mrs. Dalloway (p. 294) connects the Morrises in Walsh's hotel with Sally and Clarissa's interest in Morris's political writings.RBThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06188888757208922148noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-805540988587071256.post-84757251257498152652012-08-04T12:55:02.329-07:002012-08-04T12:55:02.329-07:00Hi,

I have been working my way through as much Morris as possible and am keen to pursue the link between him and Woolf - having quite accidentally come across the Stansky pamphlet and then this blog. This entry is from a while back - I just wondered if you had or were aware of anybody else who has since followed up on this connection - just in case my inept googling leads to unnecessarily reinventing the wheel.

Sorry for the random interruption - fantastic blog!

Ani.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-805540988587071256.post-64807530946162825712010-09-28T20:51:20.148-07:002010-09-28T20:51:20.148-07:00hey your blog design is very nice, neat and fresh ...hey your blog design is very nice, neat and fresh and with updated content, make people feel peace and I always enjoy browsing your site.

- MurkAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-805540988587071256.post-86893490201764767512008-12-26T08:39:00.000-08:002008-12-26T08:39:00.000-08:00For a good account of Virginia Woolf's interest in...For a good account of Virginia Woolf's interest in Morris, see Peter Stansky's stimulating little pamphlet,'William Morris and Bloomsbury' (London: Cecil Woolf, 1997), pp.5-7 - though he does not discuss her novels. She had read the Mackail biography ('a very interesting book'), wanted to borrow 'Pilgrims of Hope' from a friend, enjoyed 'Chants for Socialists', and in February 1940 expresses an inclination to write about Morris.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-805540988587071256.post-77830130663133276582008-12-23T20:50:00.000-08:002008-12-23T20:50:00.000-08:00I don't think it's coincidental that films such as...I don't think it's coincidental that films such as "The Hours" and a revival of interest in the likes of Woolf's novels and the Hogarth Press, or fine press printing in general, or the Kelmscott Press in particular should resonate with us today. Woolf wanted good books to be available in comely editions; Morris wanted to save the world from shoddy goods. In an economy overwhelmed by greed and garbage, that we should yearn for quality and content shouldn't surprise us. They're probably all part of the utopian impulse you mentioned in your last post. In hard times, we long for, and imagine, better.Owlfarmerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15373358232893937182noreply@blogger.com
